Beyond Detox: The Next Steps for Drug and Alcohol Rehabilitation

drug and alcohol treatment

When you are ready to change your life for the better by giving up substance abuse, finding a treatment program is the right way to go. How you start treatment, though, is determined by your medical condition. If you take heavy substances like meth or heroin, you will likely start with a detox program.

After that, you follow a similar treatment path as anyone else starting their recovery. Let’s take a look at how detox works and what you can expect in a recovery program.

You May Start with Detox

If you use substances that are highly addictive or have dangerous withdrawal symptoms, you will likely start your treatment in detox. This is where you are temporarily isolated with medical staff to help you through the withdrawal process.

Most detox programs move you to a semi-isolated facility so that you can’t access more substances and so that skilled medical care providers can oversee the process. It gives you the best chance of getting drugs out of your system safely.

Once you complete detox, you begin the treatment program in the same way that everyone else does.

Residential Treatment

Residential treatment programs are usually the first step after detox. For many people, they start directly in the residential program. You move into a treatment facility that provides a range of treatment options while also keeping you isolated from your usual influences. That way, you can get substances out of your system while participating in treatment.

Treatment usually consists of:

● Group therapy
● Individual behavioral therapy
● Other types of activity-based therapy
● Work programs in some treatment centers

Outpatient Treatment

The next step is outpatient treatment, which lets you move out of the facility while still participating in several treatment options. You return to the facility for group therapy, individual therapy, and several other options based on the program. However, it gives you a chance to reintegrate into society while still getting the support that you need to set up a sober life.

Outpatient treatment is your chance to start a new life free of substance abuse and the influences that triggered your addiction. Successful reintegration here means that you are nearly ready to leave treatment behind and live your life.

Aftercare Programs

As you establish a new sober life, aftercare helps you establish resources in your community to support you beyond treatment. Group therapy and sponsors are the most common programs available. Your goal is to find the community resources needed to keep you out of trouble and help you reinforce your sober living decisions.
